Apple ID, Self-Service, and lightly managed iPhones

So we're going to start using Casper to manage iPhones. These phones will be paid for by the hospital, but the end users will be expected to use them basically like personally owned devices. In other words, the devices are going to be very lightly managed. Management became aware of the need for Casper on the phones when someone turned in a phone with activation lock active. We didn't have the Apple ID credentials and so were unable to reuse the phone.

I'm going to use Apple Configurator 2 for initial setup and we're going to "supervise" the phones. I've run through the process a couple of times, and after the unit is configured it prompts the end user for an Apple ID in order to install the Self-Service app. This prompted a couple of questions:

  1. Can (or should) we avoid installing the Self-Service app?
  2. If we don't install the Self-Service app can we push it out later, but if we do will that require use of our company apple id?
  3. Should we have the end-user use their Apple ID to install Self-Service?
  4. If I install Self-Service using a company apple id, and then remove the company apple id before giving the phone to the end user, when there's an update for Self-Service will I have to re-enter the company's apple id?

Thanks!

Seth

Hi Seth,

  1. Yes it can be turned off in Mobile Device Settings
  2. You can push it out later by turning it on in Settings, or by configuring it as an app for certain scopes only.
  3. You would either push install it and have them put their credentials in, or to avoid prompting use VPP to purchase free licenses which you assign to them
  4. yes. Look into VPP..
