Apple Software Update + Content Caching Servers = Best SUS Solution?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can elucidate on the subject of Apple Software Update 10.13 Caching Servers JSS.

I have a number of 10.13.2 Mac Mini's enabled with Content Caching. If I point my clients to Apple's Software Update Service via a JPS Computer Policy, will my Caching Servers mitigate the WAN consumption by properly caching all requested updates?

Topology:
JPS 10.0.0
Mac Mini's 10.13.2, Content Caching Enabled

Thanks!

You should enable Software Update service on your Server.app and point all your clients to it instead of Apple's server via terminal command:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL “http://your.server.com:8088/index.sucatalog”

Regarding caching, yes, just make sure your Server.app has the proper settings.

Hi almonte,

Server v 5.4 no longer offers SUS. I'm told that Caching Server is the expected replacement, but from review it's not a direct comparable technology, and thus can not officially replace a SUS Server / Client relationship.

@chris.denoia

In Server v5.4 they still offer SUS, it is only hidden.

  • Go to Server.app
  • Go to View
  • And voila, there you see Software update
  • Once you click it it will appear in the regular menu.
