Apple Volume Licensing Program - distributing, updating, licensing, etc.

The Volume Licensing public facing page has a few interesting points regarding distribution and patch management for Apple software downloaded from the App Store and distributed using Casper (etc).

So if we download apps on a dedicated admin Mac and distribute, users won't get notified of any updates (good).

I guess this makes distribution easier since we know App Store only installs into /Applications so packaging should be a snap.

There are two ways to get the latest versions of Apple software to every Mac in your organization. You can download the applications you need from the Mac App Store and distribute them using the tools you’re already familiar with, such as Apple Remote Desktop or NetInstall.

...[snip]...

Only the Mac system on which the application was originally downloaded will be notified of software updates.

...[snip]...

Updates for Apple software are available only through the Mac App Store on the original system.

So does anyone know:

1. Since App Store apps are licensed through your App Store account...does this mean we no longer have to deal with license keys when packaging? 2. How about 3rd party apps...do they follow the same general rule regarding distribution?

Hoping for any useful feedback/experiences from the gurus on this list.

PS, I pinged our Apple rep...will post follow up when we have more info.

Thanks,
Don

There's the key word "Apple software". So far as I know there's nothing that can be done about paid Non-Apple App's. Which is honestly driving me nuts!
