Apps disappearing after scope change

We did an upgrade from JSS 8.72 to 9.21 back in December 2013. Between the upgrade and now we have not changed the scope of any app in our library.

This week we added two users into the scope of 6 apps (these are set to be managed and served through Self Service but not pushed). Nothing was removed from the scoping, only added. As soon as this change was made, we got reports from our iPad users that apps were uninstalling themselves and removing app data along with it (only discovered after users reinstalled the apps). The apps in question were the ones we had made the scope change to, but since nothing was removed from scope we are trying to figure out what could cause Casper to send out the uninstall command.

Its been a very difficult week for us as we have had a huge amount of data loss on staff and student iPads. JAMF are investigating, but we don't have any definitive answers yet. Anybody out there experiencing the same thing? Or any ideas as to why this could happen?

Thanks
Raj

Hi,

I'm having a similar issue where apps are randomly removing but I think that is a problem with our JSS timing out on LDAP searches.

If you made a change to the scoping, you would have been prompted with 2 options - distribute to all, or distribute to new.

If you selected distribute to all the way it behaves is, it will remove the app and then re-apply it to all devices. So any app data you had will go with the initial removal

I think there *may* have been a bug where 'distribute to new' did a 'distribute to all' in error.. I had a note written down to myself to test it, as I saw it happen once or twice. When I got around to testing on 9.22 it was not happening.

We have the same issue. Running the latest JSS and iOS software. Apps randomly deleting, erasing all data created with those apps.

Pro Tip: Always scope iOS apps to a Smart Group, so you don't have to Edit the app. Add and remove users to the SG and they will be the only ones getting the new apps or having them removed.

Edit:

Pro Tip: Always scope Targets/Limitations/Exclusions for iOS apps to a Smart Group, so you don't have to Edit the app. Add and remove devices to the SG and those devices will be the only ones getting the new apps or having them removed.

For LDAP users as a Limitation? Not sure I have not done this yet. Also still testing 9.40. But the above has worked well for me this year from 9.10 through 9.25.

thanks,
