Clients delaying an installation

Not applicable

I wanted to see if anyone has a way of letting clients delay an installation
of software. Example: A message pops up before the install and allows
clients to click a button and delay the process to a later fixed time like
30 minutes or so, or allows them to click a button and continue with the
install. If anyone knows of a script or something along those lines that I
could use with Casper I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Sean

seems to me this would be a perfect situation for self service, then they can do it whenever they want.

I would agree, but I need to see if there is another way. The powers that be
like to keep the experiences the same for both Windows and Mac's.

This is going to sound strange but I think it would work. You could create
a policy that runs a script that would give the user a choice and keep
bugging them every 30 min or so to install. Then once the user clicks ok,
you could have a second policy setup with a custom trigger, then the script
can then send a command to the jamf binary to trigger that custom trigger. You could also use this in conjunction with caching packages before hand as
well so that the package is already on the computer and ready to be
installed.
I am currently looking into this myself as I want to be able to force users
to upgrade certain things as opposed to waiting for them to use the self
service app to update. I also don't want to step on any toes as far as
making people restart if they are giving a presentation or working on a
tight deadline.

Can anyone else think of a reason that this wouldn't work?

wouldn't a popup every so often be just as bad...especially in a presentation to say....a client?

Unless you have the policy for the script to run at login. Most would
already be logged in by that point that they would know they need to install
the update before. Another thought would be to add a text input box to let
the user enter how much time to delay in minutes, so the user has a little
more control of their pending update. This task in itself is pretty major
considering the amount of time it takes to create a script like this, unless
someone on this list is willing to volunteer to writing it (hint...hint..). :)
