Help with upgrade/transfer from 7.1 to 8.43

My client has been running 7.1 on a PPC server for a number of years.
They recently decided to put a new server in, and upgrade to 8.43
JAMF very kindly provided instructions on how to complete the update, although all instructions were for upgrading on the same machine. Due to the fact that it is a PPC machine, I am unable to run the installer for 8.43

The decision was taken to create a new server from scratch, which seemingly went very well. However, when trying to recon the machines in the building, there is an issue with submitting...
- Throuigh Recon, it is possible to connect to the machines, but when you choose to submit it says that there was a problem. - This only effects machines of 10.4.11 or lower, as all 10.6/10.7 machines submit without issue. However, the clients machine base is 95% 10.4.11, and the whole point of the Casper upgrade was to enable an OS update across the board in April.

Has anyone come across this issue before?
I am guessing this has something to do with the binary for 7.1 being installed on the machines already?

My initial thought was to delete /usr/sbin/jamf from each machine, and then run recon, but I don't want to cause any more problems sop was hoping someone might be able to help please?

Thanks,

Evan

Can't you import the JSS backup from the old 7.1 server into the new 8.43 server, repoint DNS and go from there?

You might want to ask JAMF for help to make sure the transition goes smoothly. I think they charge $300 for this kind of thing when done remotely.

EDIT: Misread your post, so if there is a problem getting the clients updated, you should be able to create a 8.43 QuickAdd and push it from the old 7.1 JSS.

Thanks Don. I will try the Quick add via the old server.

I'm in the process of going from 7.31 to 8.4x - here are the steps I'm in process of reviewing...

A review of the next steps: Just to confirm a clean transition: 1. Backup the databases from the old server 2. Scp them to the new server (to replace those I imported) 3. Open the java version of the JSS Database Utility using the command "java –jar /Library/JSS/bin/JSSDatabaseUtil.jar"
4. Import the databases into the new server – restore backup – and point to the imported files
5. Switch to the JSS Database Utility on the new server – Back up Database tab, and schedule automatic backups for 3am
6. Back up the database now
7. Update the JSS URL on BOTH the old and new server:
a. On the 7.31 server Management Tab – JSS URL – change to new server IP
b. On the Casper 8 server on the Settings Tab – in the Global Management and Framework Settings – change to new server IP
8. Move the new server via the web JSS to the master distribution point, the old server to just a distribution point - (Save)
9. Look at the other server to make sure the distribution point changes are there
10. Open up Casper in a web browser on the new server pointing to new server
11. Go to computer Management Framework Settings – Self Service Tab and Check – Automatically install Self Service to all managed computers
12. Review all settings, check to make sure accounts are set properly. I found some didn't come across when initially building out the new server as a distribution point.
13. Leave the old server on. With it now pointing to the new master server – when systems that haven’t been on the network show up, they will be pointed to the new master server.
14. Create the new QuickAdd installer
15. Distribute the Casper 8.43 client to those who need it. (customers whose systems not seen in a long time.....)

It could just be Recon itself. Here is what the 8.4 Administrative Guide saids.

Inventory

Recon can run locally on the following operating systems:

Mac OS X 10.5.x
Mac OS X 10.6.x
Mac OS X 10.7.x
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Server 2003
Windows Vista
Windows Server 2008
Windows 7
Recon can remotely acquire computers running Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

Older versions of Recon (available by contacting JAMF Software Support) can remotely acquire computers running the following operating systems:

Mac OS 8.6
Mac OS 9.x
Mac OS X 10.1.x
Mac OS X 10.2.x
Mac OS X 10.3.x
Mac OS X 10.4.x
Windows NT4
Windows ME

Recon can also acquire synced mobile devices running iOS 4 or later.

Thanks Armando. That seems like the simplest and most obvious answer, and I am ashamed I overlooked it.
