How to put MDM in Maintenance Mode?

Hi,

I wonder how I can set the MDM in maintenance mode. We will have an interruption on our DB server, and to avoid any problems we would like to put the MDM in maintenance mode. But from the doc it seems as if the maintenance mode pages are only display during software startup/shutdown. I was expecting to find an option to set the MDM in maintenance mode, so it would not attempt to apply any changes to the DB. Completely shutting down tomcat appears to be a bit rude to the users.

Any hints?

There's an option under System Settings > Maintenance Pages, but if Tomcat is restarting what would serve up the maintenance page?
