iOS 7.1 - "User and Location Data" removed

When an iPad is updated to 7.1, the next time it updates inventory, the user is removed. We have at this time 16 iPads with no user associated. They all have 7.1.

Side effects:
1) profiles are removed that are linked to users/groups
2) some "managed" apps are removed (not sure why, since they are not 'managed')
3) Self Service Web Clip is re-installed (not that it matters)
4) Our WiFi profile is removed and unless they re-login in to our RADIUS option, they have no connection (so we can't update their profiles until they do)

Anyone else seeing this issue?

What JSS version? Running 9.24 here and all of our 7.1 iPads still have usernames.

I am at the same school as Roger. We are running 9.24 on a mac mini server. We have mixed results so far. On one campus we had 1 out of 6 iPads loose their usernames, on another campus we had 16 out of 18 loose their usernames. We have not instructed our students to update yet, these are just the ones that did it on their own. The other interesting thing that we are having is, even after manually re-adding their username to the device, the next time it goes through an automatic inventory update, the username is removed. And actually since school has let out an additional 9 iPads have updated and lost their username.

We've blocked the update internally, but so far 33 of our users have upgraded to 7.1 at home. Each one still lists a username and all the other LDAP data under the 'User and location' tab. We are running JSS 9.24 too.

@mschuring, that sounds more like an issue with LDAP in the JSS.

Can you manually search for the student? Does it show all their information there?

Great thought @bentoms. However, I do not think it is an LDAP issue, in that I can search for any of my users and simply re-add them after they have been removed. The LDAP has kept all of their information as far as I can tell. Even after correctly re-associating the device with the correct user, the next automatic inventory update, it is removing the user from the device again. We fortunately named all of the devices with the student name and have stored all serial numbers for the devices in our SIS so it is easy to re-associate the device with the user. They just loose their profiles during this process, in particular our proxy configuration profile.

We are running 9.22. We have similar issues after ios 7.1 upgrade:

1) profiles are removed that are linked to group and then added back to the group
2) some "managed" apps are removed (we have two students missing Notability and when they reinstalled the app, the data is gone)
3) Our WiFi profile is removed and unless they re-login in to our campuses, they have no connection. Once connection is back, configuration profiles will be reinstalled.

We believe that we have narrowed it down to an issue with an older enrollment profile. Devices that we had enrolled into our JSS with an enrollment profile with the iPCU option checked seem to be the iPads that are loosing their user/device association. We are deploying a quick link for our students to re-enroll their iPads with an over the air enrollment and are hoping that solves the issue. (The bad enrollment profiles are the ones before they had a separate trust certificate).

Hey all,

It looks like we’ve opened up a defect to address this issue in the cases where the enrollment profile used prior to updating to iOS 7.1 has the “Create profile to use with iPCU” box checked.

For reference, the defect ID is D-006513.

We should be seeing a fix for it soon.

If you have any questions or if you’re seeing the behavior without having an enrollment profile with the “Create profile to use with iPCU” option enabled, I’d recommend reaching out to your Account Manager.

Thanks!

Looks like this was fixed in 9.25. See the release notes.

[D-006513] Fixed an issue that caused User and Location inventory information to be reset for a mobile device when upgrading to iOS 7.1 if the device was enrolled with a profile that used the Create profile for use with iPCU option.

In regards to the Notability documents being missing: There is a Setting inside Notability to use iCloud, and I have been having the students turn it on just in case it is uninstalled. The downside is the same as with iWork apps (Pages, Keynote etc.) in that you can never get back a deleted document. Even restoring a previous backup doesn't work as it immediately syncs with iCloud and removes it again.

If anyone knows of a workaround for this 'feature' let me know. :)

thanks,

chris
