Quick note from: http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/
Lion Server
Simply a better server.
Lion Server is now part of Mac OS X Lion. It's easy to set up your Mac as a server and take advantage of the many services Lion Server has to offer. Here are just a few of the new features that make server deployment faster, easier, and more powerful than ever.

I'm quite curious as to which services are now gone. I'm assuming that on the top of the list is SUS. Looks like (again) Apple is forcing our hand to move to something that isn't Apple in order to manage their systems. And they say they're committed to Enterprise… My foot.

Yeah the options were either: a) allow virtualization of the OS on non-apple hardware or b) merge it into the client OS.

Separate install, server essentials are 179 MB, server admin tools (presumably not a webpage) are 225.6 MB (or so I've "heard", *cough*). On Feb 24, 2011, at 9:19 AM, Thomas Larkin wrote:

Hi Folks,
I'm as much of a drooling geek as the next guy over this stuff, but I feel compelled to point out that anyone who has proper access to official information about Mac OS X Lion, beyond what is published at http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/ is under an Apple NDA.
I hate to stifle discussion, but I don't want to see this list come under scrutiny for NDA issues.
I'd be glad to discuss any Lion stuff that Apple has released to the public.
Again, sorry to be a wet blanket, but that's the agreement I signed.
Thanks,

So just got off the phone with Apple Enterprise support. The reason I can't light up 10.6.5 for machines that can't take 10.6.6 (our full disk encryption product) is because Cupertino no longer serves it out.
Lovely.
I swear, Apple is making a concerted effort to hate Enterprise. Seriously? What's that, a gig and a half of disk space saved out on Akamai?? This is something so easy to just leave alone and let continue functioning the way it has for years that I can only conclude that it's an effort to make life harder for Enterprise support folks.
Yet again, Apple forces our hand to use something else to manage their products. I'm now forced to a) hack the SUS to manually inject the required updates – which appears difficult as your local file makes a reference to the file that's served by Cupertino, b) use Casper to fully manage patches – which I'm ok with, it's just time I don't have to engineer that process or c) use yet another third party utility (munki?) to manage software updates.
Way to go Apple. Perhaps once Mr. Jobs crosses over (should that day unfortunately come early for him) someone will realize that this is a market that they can actively grow instead of actively stifle.

And seriously, we live and die by FIPS in the Federal space. I'm (perhaps)
overly simplifying things, but for brevity, it goes something like this:
We're not FIPS compliant, DOD doesn't continue contracts with us,
Laboratory closes.
The whole reason we needed a second SUS was to manage patches for fully
encrypted machines. Know what happens when you serve out 10.6.6 to an
encrypted machine right now? You can brick it. Granted, I had no say in
the choice of this product, but that's an entirely different
conversation...
I'm mainly upset with singing the praises of a platform that continues to
make life hard for the people that sing the praises of it.
You know?

So - if you apply the 10.6.5 combo update to your current 10.6.5 systems, they will then accept the 10.6.6 update automatically from SuS. Yes, it's a bug that got us to this point; but the fix is not all that difficult. The update is posted - still - on the Support site:

Yes, but that takes the application of that 10.6.5 out of band of the SUS. If I'm going out of band of the SUS, I'm going out of band whole hog. It didn’t used to be this way. I used to be able to mirror all updates (e.g. 10.6.1, .2, .3, .4, .5, .6). Now my only option is the .6 update. If an encrypted machine is on 10.6.4, I can't update it to 10.6.6 safely. The latest supported OS version from the encryption vendor is 10.6.5. (And trust me, if it were my decision, I wouldn't have picked the vendor.)

Jared,
Who is your encryption vendor?
Posted on 02-28-2011 05:20 AM
WinMagic.
Seems kind of a dumb name. Why would I trust anything encrypted with the word "magic" in the name? And, "win". It's definitely not a "win" nor "magic"
The product itself works, I just wish they were quicker on the uptake on Apple updates. I mean, I've got access to the pre-release stuff just like any other dev… Not sure why they're not on the ball with it. 10.6.6 was out just as they were getting a version of the client that was 10.6.5 cleared. Frustrating.

It's not just WinMagic, PGP is in the same boat. It has to do with the changes the updates make to the EFI. Since most WDE (whole disk encryption) applications add in "bootguard" type screens (passcode pre-Apple login) they interact with the EFI. As such, if the WDE vendor is not in-line with producing updates as quickly as Apple has been these last couple of months you're stuck.

I'm interested to see if Apple's FDE in Lion has any sort of key escrow or ability to communicate with a central server. If I know Apple like I think I know Apple, it doesn't and therefore I can't just use the built-in, vendor supported mechanism. Though of course I'll be fully adhering to my NDA once I'm under it (likely this afternoon…)
Ah Apple, you're so close yet so far when it comes to Enterprise…

Pretty sure this will not violate NDA.. Apologies if it does but John Gruber @ daring fireball<http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/02/24/lion> wrote this:
So Mac OS X Server isn’t dead, it’s just no longer a separate product. You can turn any machine running Lion into a server. It’s just a built-in feature (but you need to specify the machine as a server when you install the OS — it’s not a switch you can flip later on).
