I was actually able to just upload the InstallESD.dmg and Casper recognized it.

I get a XML error and it dies, can't seem to get it working in Casper Admin 8.21

Caveat on this --

You have to be running Casper Admin 8.21 from Lion in order to mark ESD.dmg as an OS Installer.

If you do so from Snow Lep, Casper Admin gives an error.

Hope this helps someone.

Hey all,

Just wanted to expand on that comment (which is totally correct).

In order to scan an OS installer or to compile a configuration containing an OS installer, you must be running Casper Admin on hardware that is capable of using the installer in question.

I.e., a hardware-specific iMac OS installer must be scanned and/or compiled on the same model of iMac the installer was intended for.

I hope this is helpful.

This brings up the question about the newest hardware. Apple isn't shipping software with these machines. Since the MacBook Air and Mac Mini come with different builds, how do we get our hands on the hardware-specific installers?

Thanks

You should still be able to create a disk image of the USB-based installer, correct?

You also can't compile a 10.6.8 image with an OSX update on a Lion machine… it errors out :(

No more USB-based installer.....

Sounds like all of this is a good reason to pony up for the Mac Developer program. You get downloadable versions of XCode and your OS.

I am a paid developer. But the question still remains, new hardware comes with different builds. These builds aren't available on any form of media or the developer program.

is everybody sure new hardware has separate builds now? Yes that used to be the case but is it still the case, everybody is getting the same Lion Download, of course I suppose as soon as new hardware comes out we either need the new version to be available on the app store for us to download or there has to be a way to get a recovery instance. I will ask apple.

According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 The mini comes with 11A2061. They have not updated the Air, but I believe they come with 11A2063. I spoke with my SE, waiting to hear back.

Apple's whole ethos has been to provide one OS install for everything, but they have got in a habit of providing specific releases for latest hardware. Ideally, you would wait for the next point release when, hopefully, one OS for all hardware (eg. 3 versions of 10.6.7, but one 10.6.8).

Of course, this is a little more awkward when there is only one release and you can't use the previous one :)

The new hardware that only comes with Lion will automatically offer to download a fresh recovery partition from Apple if you install a blank drive, according to what I've read (I think Apple has a KBase on this; I don't remember where I read it...). Previous hardware will not, though (yet).
