So I found an interesting thing when setting up a new server today. We use infoblox here and we do have some weird DNS registering issues (where the Macs get stale names but we usually can manually change it.) When installing a fresh Lion Server we noticed the computer wasn't registering DNS AT ALL! We tried everything on the face of the earth to get it to work but it refused. I then took the SAME machine loaded 10.6.8 on it and BAM it registered DNS perfectly, upgraded the server from 10.6.0 to Lion and the server is perfect.
Looks like clean installs of Lion might have some buggy DNS components that installing SL first solves.

so the mac wasn't registering itself in DNS?
My clean 10.7 installs have all been registering in DNS fine. Just a win2k8 domain. DNS handled by some DC's.
Regards,
Ben.

Correct but specifically this is an Infoblox environment so anyone else with Infoblox they may want to take note just to make sure they aren't wasting their time.
