Smart Group fails to update

If we make any changes the smart group update fails with the following error.

An error occurred while saving the changes.
See JAMFSoftwareServer.log for more details.

That's indicating a problem with the webapp or the tomcat service.

What does it say in the log when the problem happens?

I would try the usual things like rebooting the server or the tomcat service and if that doesn't work, possibly re-installing the webapp.
