I've heard there's a way to monitor software usage? A lot of software we
purchase as Œstandard' now when we get a new equipment is leftover from 10.4
days, and I know Apple has seen to include a lot of the apps as part of the
OS now, so we want to look at and justify buying (or not buying) the apps
anymore.
How can I setup Casper / JSS to meter those apps? Is that under settings
--> licensed software mgmt? I've tried 'create licensed software' but it
didn't seem to register anything, even after doing a recon on a test box.

Hi John,
Ours Licensing info works fine.
Edit your existing license that you have created. You will need to put exact Application name/s in Software Definitions part.
Example:
Add Application
Title is: VMware Fusion.app
Version like: -blank- (don't type anything here - don't type blank :) - so it will scan all the versions)
If you use existing templates it fills these details correctly for you. But it has only limited Software titles.
Once you have set your license. Go to Logs section in your JSS and select Application Usage Logs. Here you can get report for your licensed software you have created.
Set the date then choose View Usage. On the new page select Unused License, you will see which computers hasn't been using this app for that time period.
I have set a Policy to Update Inventory (policy - advance - Update Inventory selected) once per computer once per day, every 30. This is where jss gets it's info...
I hope this helps.
