The 10.13.4 DisplayLink hijinx have led to be me being asked how many laptop docking stations are deployed and of what type. I can detect DisplayLink based docks by looking for DisplayLinkManager in the I/O kit registry or USB vendor 0x1e79 in System Profiler. I can also find Thunderbolt based docks in System Profiler, but what about USB-C docks with video output via USB-C alternate mode? Is there any way to detect if a display is being driven by alt mode, or if a particular USB-C hub is presenting itself as a dock or port replicator?
