We just use a barcode sticker that we apply to each device. We integrate the sticker's ID (numbers/letters) into the machine name.

we apply a barcode to each of our devices and reflect that in the computer name with a prefix of the location in which the device will live. I'm not certain of the company who provides us the stickers but this method has worked well for us.

We have a heavy duty little white barcode sticker that has an asset number on it, in the form A01234 (A for asset). We then add lettering to it depending on the type of asset, ie; MA01234 for Macs, PA01234 for printers, etc. We also use the asset number as the device/computer name.

They get supplied by our Support Services department, so not sure what they do in terms of printing/ordering.

We order our Macs from CDW in North America and they print/attach custom barcode asset tags for us (there is a small fee for this) and we have control over the asset numbers they use. They send us a spreadsheet with all of the asset data so we can do bulk uploads into our asset management system.

Our asset numbers are just numbers, and the number is used in our system naming convention.
