NetSUS question

Hi all,
I have just started to test NetSUS appliance and it works great performance wise. But I have couple of issues so far.
I don't think NetSUS has showing Mac OS X Updates for 10.7 and 10.8 and I am not sure issue is related to this...

Also I can only get my test NetSUS work if I put the Branch URL as below.
http://mynetsus.com//content/catalogs/index_test.sucatalog

But I don't think it works correctly as the client doesn't get the key software updates like 10.7.5 update etc. But it gets the rest. EDIT: Perhaps it is related to the issue as above.

in the NetBoot/SUS Appliance User Guide v1.0 it mentions some examples, but they never worked for me.
Am I doing something wrong?

Branch URLs
Branch URLs will vary depending on the operating system running on clients. Example branch URLs for clients running Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7 are listed below.
Mac OS X 10.5
https://sus.mycompany.corp/content/catalogs/index-leopard.merged-1.<Branch name>.sucatalog
Mac OS X 10.6
https://sus.mycompany.corp/content/catalogs/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.<Branch name>. sucatalog
Mac OS X 10.7
https://sus.mycompany.corp/content/catalogs/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.<Branch name>.sucatalog

I talked to one of the JAMF folks about a similar issue last week. The url that they ended up giving me was indeed different than in the NetSUS documentation:

For a branch called 'All' for 10.8 - notice the 'others' in the path.

http://netsus.yourcompany.com/content/catalogs/others/index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1_All.sucatalog

Your best bet for this sort of stuff is to hit the Reposado documentation directly on github. You'll get a good idea of what's going on under the hood on the appliance that way.

@ jarednichols yes, it made a lot of sense after reading the docs. Thanks!
So it looks like I have to send the specific command to specific OS group to get it working.
BTW I have the Mac OS X Updates showed today on my test NetSUS

10.8

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://netsus.yourcompany.com/content/catalogs/others/index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1_test.sucatalog

10.7

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://netsus.yourcompany.com/content/catalogs/others/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1_test.sucatalog

10.6

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://netsus.yourcompany.com/content/catalogs/others/index-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1_test.sucatalog

10.5

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://netsus.yourcompany.com/content/catalogs/others/index-leopard.merged-1_test.sucatalog

BTW thanks for the info pbenham. However I had to put "test" instead of "All" at the end to get it to work. Because "test" is my NetSUS branch name.

Do you get all the updates to 10.8 client?
It looks like iMovie and iPhoto updates are not listed if I run:
softwareupdate -l

Even though they are showing in NetSUS.

Appstore also shows them if I run it from the GUI

Any ideas?

might need to set it for root user too

defaults write /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://netsus.yourcompany.com/content/catalogs/others/index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1_test.sucatalog

etc...etc per OS version

cheers

Matt

@ matthew-c, Our SUS is not behind the proxy

Yeah but who are you running ```
softwareupdate -l
``` as?
When you added your SUS to the JSS, did you select the "Set Server System Wide" option? This option forces that server for all users instead of just the root user.
Running locally with sudo command
@msblake running as system level MCX and running a defaults command to main Library as well as root directory
hmmm this explains it: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/reposado/aWKkRXOY3FM
This is disappointing. Out of interest did you install the iLife apps from the App Store or the DVD?
Cem
No it came with the retina OS (factory)
iLife apps are not updated if they are from the appstore... via ASUS
Cem
hey Rob how are you?
yeah this was a quick test Mac so didn't bother with InstaDMG yet. I will extract the iLife then add the one I have already packaged. See how that goes.
Get the same with the new Mac Minis too. :(
Hey Cem, pretty good. I just recently redid my iLife, reinstalled the DVD version rather then the App Store verison, for updating it is a lot easier, rather then packaging 3 apps at 1GB + you install a 4GB package with all apps and then just run the 300MB pkg updater...
