Thanks for the heads up. I'm trying to find a direct download link for a combo updater, but not seeing it yet. I guess its not posted yet? Is it just in the App Store for the moment?

Downloaded the combo 10.10.2 update and tried to run on a 10.10.1 install and came back with could not install on the volume, but running the update from the App Store worked.

I don't know if the combo update is country or region specific as I download the combo from a US source and tried to install it on a Australian region install, thoughts anyone?

@dmw3, I've seen other reports (@donmontalvo) for example.

But updating via MAS/ASUS works. Seems like that installer is incorrectly reading the OS version.

Why the combo anyways?

Oh & pinging @mm2270

Yup, having this combo issue too. Posted it in a more ?-visible place and hoping for some info.

@boettchs, from IRC someone posted that it fails on checking the system version:

if (compareBuildVersions(my.target.systemVersion.ProductBuildVersion, '14B24') > 0)

@bentoms, I have always run updates from a combo updater as opposed to the deltas as this cleans out unwanted files that maybe left (best practice), have done this since combo updates were first released.

I normally run the combo first on a test box then if it has no trouble also run the delta update on another test box and check if both work ok.

This is happening on my personal laptop, I'll try MAS. Unfortunately MAS isn't an option in some enterprise environments.

@donmontalvo, well MAS is just a GUI for ASUS or Caching.

Enterprise environments should be running one of them.

Point taken, yes if ASUS then yes.

The Combo is being looked at by ? folks.

@boettchs I'm guessing that since Seeders are going through MAS, they may have dropped the ball by not also testing the stand alone updaters (delta and combo). Lets hope this is a lesson learned for Apple. :)

How are people deploying the combo update?

I've had problems when enabling on our SUS so started deploying with a logout trigger. This still caused me issues with 10.9.5 as I was getting PrivateCaller error messages so had to add a line to rm /var/folders/*

Any help suggestions appreciated.

I am seeing the combo install issue as well.

We need our own Apple Fail Blog. Don, I think you are probably right... Apple's internal testing procedures need a refresh.

Apple's quality control for software releases is now officially in the toilet. I just don't know what's going on over there these days. I mean, how on earth could something like the combo update not actually working have made it past anyone? I know they've never been perfect, but they've been on a roll of crappy releases lately.
Not happy with them right now.

Yeah, at least we have it in their view and still waiting on a reply after they said they were looking at it. Hoping today they'll have something for us. What a mess - which is why I still think that they should NOT release the GM until dev's and seeders get to test. That would stop most of these publicly humiliating issues we've seen the last couple years.

If anyone wants to run this procedure before ? fixes it, here's a tutorial from T Kessler.

Combo Updater has been reposted and is ready to DL:

*EDIT: If the page shows a date of Jan 28th, you should be OK. Some (me) are unable to get the cached page from Jan 27th to go away...
Just ran it over the GM release and it now works.

Thanks for the heads up @boettchs! Downloading the new one now.

Something I just noticed, which is another indication its a different installer. The previous one from 1/27 came down as "osxupdcombo10.10.2.dmg" The new one downloads as "OSXUpdCombo10.10.2.dmg" Notice the case difference in the name.
Traditionally, OS X Combo Updates and even the deltas, have always used the upper and lower case naming convention as in the new version. I'm not sure why the other one used the lower case only naming.
I could just be reading into, but something tells me the previous updater was packaged by some off shore development team, and the new one got pulled in house to Apple HQ, packaged by lead developers.

@mm2270 - yes, even the naming was "unchecked" as far as I can tell. There is also a size delta I believe due to the ARD bits (if short-term memory is intact).

Gave the ? some grief over this. I am asking politely that they change the release process to include a final check by dev's + seeders to see if some of this can be caught before public release. Just sloppy, and with the cash they have these days, they can hire a couple more people...

In a previous gig interviewed a good number of people for Mac Support positions, most rotated in/out of WiPro, Unisys, etc., assigned to the Apple account, the stories were disturbing.

One issue I did notice with this update was that it re-enabled the "Guest" account, anyone else had this happen?

scottb

@dmw3 - yes, it's been reported and remains unfixed. At least for some, me included.
